What is CHD and what are its symptoms?
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), commonly known as coronary artery disease (CAD), atherosclerotic heart disease or ischemic heart disease, is a result of formation of cholesterol plaques on the inner side of the arterial (type of blood vessels) walls that supply oxygen and nutrients to the myocardium (heart muscles). The plaque often narrows the arteries blocking the blood flow to the heart & results in the reduction of oxygen available to the tissues. This causes infraction of artery walls, i.e. tissue death. Due to this, heart experiences more pressure to pump the same amount of blood, finally succumbing to cause heart attack and stroke. The most common form of CHD is arthrosclerosis. CHD disorder is characterized by the blood clots due to the accumulation of cholesterol and lipids in the artery walls. It may not necessarily produce any symptoms, for symptoms are only developed when there is a significant fall in the blood & the oxygen supply. One of the indicators is the chest pain that propagates through the left arm, jaw, neck, shoulder blade & this is often described as angina pectoris. This symptom reflects that arteries are struggling with around 75% damage!
