Alcohol functions as a nervous system depressant. When alcohol is consumed, it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream via the stomach and small intestine. The amount of alcohol consumed is directly related to the effect it has on the body. A feeling of relaxation is achieved by drinking small amounts, but in larger doses can have adverse effects including slurred speech, difficulty walking, impaired judgment and slow reaction time. Alcohol can also cause coma or death if large amounts are consumed in a short period of time. Alcohol may interact with certain medications that cause an intensified effect of the alcohol or medication. Pregnant women should not drink alcohol as it can cause serious harm to an unborn child.
