What collection methods for my paternity test are available?

A buccal sample is the "cheek swab" test. The swab is soft and looks like a large Q-Tip. The sample is collected by rubbing the inside of the cheek with the swab. The DNA paternity test sample collected with this method is as accurate as a blood sample. You should not drink coffee for a few hours prior to the collection of the DNA sample, and smokers should rinse their mouths and brush their cheeks with a toothbrush prior to the sampling To take a buccal swab: The inside of the cheek is carefully wiped with a sterile swab. Each DNA sample is then sealed in its own envelope, labeled and sent to the laboratory to be processed. Except for babies and young children, each person can take their own swabs, since the process is very simple. The DNA test process lasts about 45 minutes for 3 people and another 60-90 minutes for the swabs to dry. A blood sample may be taken as an alternative to the swab method. This DNA test process pierces a finger with a very small lancet in order to produce a drop of blood that is transferred to a sample card. Please note that you must consult your doctor regarding the collection of a blood sample from a child who is less than eight (8) years old.
