What are the different types of alcohol testing?

Several different types of alcohol testing are available: blood alcohol testing, urine alcohol testing, saliva alcohol testing, breath alcohol testing. Blood alcohol testing is effective, however, drawing blood is an invasive and expensive procedure that most people prefer to avoid. Urine alcohol testing will indicate the presence of alcohol in a person's system, but it will not indicate an individual's current condition since it'd take 1½ to 2 hours for the alcohol to show up in the urine. Saliva alcohol testing detects the presence of alcohol in saliva, and provide an approximation of relative blood alcohol concentration. Since it is well established that the concentration of alcohol in saliva is very close to that in the blood, saliva is the preferred specimen for alcohol testing, allowing for greater detection sensitivity. Breath alcohol testing provides an accurate measure of the alcohol present in the exhaled. By measuring the alcohol content in the breath, a reliable indication of the blood alcohol level is achieved.
