What are coronary diseases?
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), commonly known as coronary artery disease (CAD), atherosclerotic heart disease or ischemic heart disease, is a result of formation of cholesterol plaques on the inner side of the arterial (type of blood vessels) walls that supply oxygen and nutrients to the myocardium (heart muscles). The plaque often narrows the arteries blocking the blood flow to the heart & results in the reduction of oxygen available to the tissues. This causes infraction of artery walls, i.e. tissue death. Due to this, heart experiences more pressure to pump the same amount of blood, finally succumbing to cause heart attack and stroke. The most common form of CHD is arthrosclerosis.
