How soon does ovulation occur after an LH (Luteinizing Hormone) surge, and what is the best time for intercourse?
Ovulation will usually occur 12 to 48 hours after the LH surge, but the most common time is 16 hours after the surge occurs. Ovulation testing in the afternoon will usually give a clearer notice of when ovulation occurs. It is recommended that you have intercourse the day of the LH surge and then two days later. You may also want to have intercourse on an additional day as "insurance" in the event that ovulation is delayed. The best option would be to also have intercourse the day before the LH surge, but this can be difficult to time with an irregular cycle. If uncertain of when ovulation might occur, you should have intercourse every other day from the 10th day of the cycle.
