Prostate cancer has four different stages. 1) Stage I means that prostate cancer cannot be detected by rectal exam and causes no symptoms. The cancer is usually found during surgery to relieve problems with urination or during a screening PSA blood test. 2) Stage II happens when the tumor is felt in a rectal exam or detected by a blood test, but there is no evidence that the cancer has spread outside the prostate. 3) Stage III happens when the cancer has spread outside the prostate to nearby tissues. 4) Finally, Stage 4 happens when cancer cells have spread to lymph nodes or to other parts of the body.
