How can we control the spread of HIV in our society?
People who get HIV infection don't realize this for a long time as they continue to look and feel healthy. Symptoms do not usually appear for several years. Remember, it is possible to have the virus but to have no obvious symptoms. There are treatments available to postpone the development of AIDS, and to make people with HIV better for longer but they often have side effects. They are not suitable for everyone and are not a long-term solution. People receiving treatment can still pass the virus on. HIV damages the body's defense system which in turn makes it more prone to some infection and cancers. The only way to know if you have the HIV virus is through a blood test known as the 'HIV Antibody Test'. There is no cure for HIV but it can be prevented from spreading if every individual gets himself/herself checked.
