Are there ways for CTS prevention?
While surgery and conservative measures have both proven to be fairly effective in CTS treament, there is no better substitute than taking all of the necessary steps to help prevent this painful and debilitating syndrome from occurring. There are several steps one could take decrease the probability of acquiring CTS; one of which is the use of specifically designed splints that maintain the wrist and hand in a proper position during work activities. One such splint that is very beneficial is the Carpal Mate™. The Carpal Mate™ is a lightweight splint designed to maintain the wrist in a neutral position to avoid excess flexion and extension while preventing excess thumb and little finger opposition. Controlling these two motions will help avoid unnecessary pressure on the median nerve and prevent overuse of the wrist and finger flexor tendons thus reducing the risk of CTS development.
In addition to use of splints, one needs to pay careful attention to the way their workspace is arranged and to the postures one assumes during work activities. It is very important that the workspace is ergonomically appropriate, meaning that objects should be positioned in such a way that excessive reaching and wrist supported as with data entry or typing. If you use vibrating tools or instruments that require you to perform a repetitive motion, you should rest periodically to minimize repetition and remember to use your entire hand when gripping objects to maximize power and stability. This type of grip will minimize the need to use more force and thus decrease the stress on your wrist.
